Brimming with an airy, carefree charm that belies its stalwart longevity, Bowman Root’s upright bushy clump springs from a woody rootstock. Masses of star-like 1 in. wide white flowers, defined by 5 slender, pointed petals, embellish loose dreamy corymbs above uberthin zigzagging sepia-hued stems and slim, nearly stalkless, toothed trifoliate leaves. Most effective when massed or utilized as a ‘filler’ plant, this easily grown eastern U.S. native promises sparkling lacy accents, bold red calyces and bronzy-red fall color for bright dappled niches as well as cut arrangements. Porteranthus trifoliatus prefers moist soil, organic mulch and shelter from hot afternoon sun, yet abides dry conditions and tree roots.
