Bowman′s Root
Gillenia
It’s easy to be delighted by this dainty yet tough, no-nonsense American wildflower. Bronzy-pink spring shoots form a low refined clump of wiry, erect and branching mahogany-tinted stems, sparsely cloaked in toothed trifoliate leaves. Fluttering a lacy dance, decorative red calyces and white star-like flowers define the lovely loose terminal panicles. Persistent sepals, ornate seed heads and crimson autumn foliage keep our interest sparked, while varied conditions—open woodlands, moderately moist, well-drained soil, sun or some shade—will help it flourish.
