Toothpick Chervil
Ammi
Once crafted into aromatic pleasant-tasting toothpicks, and reputed to cure kidney stones since ancient Egyptian times, this graceful easy-care Carrot relation hails from Europe, Asia and North Africa. An upright, ultrafine light green mass defined by round furrowed stems plus slender bipinnate linear leaves cushions the marvelous long-lasting display of domed, many-petaled greenish white umbels that make designers, floral artists, honeybees and butterflies swoon. Grown as either a self-sowing biennial or somewhat short-lived perennial, Ammi visnaga can be teamed with white-flowering perennials like Liatris spicata ‘Alba’ and Eryngium yuccifolium for a luminous medley in sunny mixed borders, well-drained cottage gardens or Mediterranean plantings.
