Anchusa azurea ‘Loddon Royalist’ full sun  new plant

“Of deep glorious color” are the words Graham Stuart Thomas, legendary author and horticulturalist, uttered to describe the deep rich blue tint, vividly saturating large edible forget-me-not like blooms, and deeming ‘Loddon Royalist’ the bluest of them all! Selected more than 50 years ago at Britain’s Loddon Nursery, this garden-worthy Borage family member and Mediterranean denizen sprouts a stubble-surfaced dark green basal rosette below infamous white-ringed dimple-centered blossoms, which perch on lax stems and make a tasty culinary garnish. Verbascum ‘Gainsborough’ and Geum ‘Prinses Juliana’ are glowing companions for those ever-blue floral wonders, while light sandy or sharp draining soil plus a shearing right after the flowers have faded will ensure its long-lived vigor.

Blooms May–June

Size: 2-1/2'–3' 0" high x 12"–18" wide. Zone 3/4.

As Summer draws to a close....

September is a transitory month in the garden. As summer’s end approaches, the shadows are growing longer and the days are becoming shorter. This time of year may find some landscapes a tad lackluster. When designing your garden, you may wish to include plants that remain perky thoughout the season or experience their heyday now. The plants featured in this newsletter provide a lot of late season oomph and promise to beckon you down the pathways of your garden.

Our next guided Saturday Stroll is September 16th., followed by October 7th. We hope you’ll come visit us this summer.

Customer Comment:

“We ordered a half-dozen Bergenia 'Bressingham White'.... Not only did they arrive in tip-top shape, but they also are thriving this spring.”
