Astelia nivicola Red Gem

Astelia

Astelia nivicola ‘Red Gem’ full sun  partial shade

Superimposed with the silky luster of abundant soft white hairs, the elegant sword-shaped foliage dons irregular, bronzed maroon stripes on an olive green background and luminous silver hues on smooth flipsides. Channeled, foot long basal leaves forge a stiffly arching evergreen tussock, arising from short thick rhizomes.

Introduced by Duncan & Davies Nursery, this dramatic New Zealand Lily relative makes an unparalleled container candidate that fancies well-drained acid soil and part shade in hot climates.

Size: 3' high x 3' wide; hardy to zone 8.

Dainty blooms and unfurling leaves forge an early spring treasure trove of color and texture.

In the last ten days, we’ve experienced all kinds of weather at Digging Dog, including frosty mornings, torrential downpours, deafening hail, glorious sunny 70 º afternoons and even sleet! Thankfully spring is almost here and signs of its arrival grow more evident every day. Brimming with possibility, youthful growth and pristine delicacy, the early spring garden is a fresh treasure trove of color and texture. The plants featured in this newsletter caught my eye while walking through the nursery and along the surrounding borders. Hopefully, a handful of them will spark your interest as well! All of us here at the nursery wish you a very happy spring and countless happy afternoons digging in a garden!

Customer Comment:

“I have often ordered by mail or online, and I must say that your plants far exceed the size and quality of most of the other nurseries with whom I have dealt.  You can be sure that I will be a frequent customer in the future.”
