Echinops bannaticus ‘Star Frost’
at Digging Dog

Echinops

Globe Thistle

Bees and butterflies adore Echinops. They are so easy to care for that you will too. Equally stunning in the garden or as a fresh or dried cut flower, their perfectly round blooms and statuesque profile bring intriguing definition to surrounding softer forms. Thriving in well drained soil, even if it is poor or sandy, the Globe Thistle is an undemanding perennial well worth making room for.

Echinops bannaticus ‘Star Frost’ full sun

Round, pearly white blooms sojourn on well-branched sturdy stalks that arenít quite as tall as Echinops ‘Blue Glow’s. Thistlelike narrow green leaves show off downy gray-green bellies, while the distinctive flowers proudly illuminate a drift of Leymus ‘Canyon Prince’.

Blooms July – early September.

Size: 3-1/3' high x 18" wide; hardy to zone 4.

Dainty blooms and unfurling leaves forge an early spring treasure trove of color and texture.

In the last ten days, we’ve experienced all kinds of weather at Digging Dog, including frosty mornings, torrential downpours, deafening hail, glorious sunny 70 º afternoons and even sleet! Thankfully spring is almost here and signs of its arrival grow more evident every day. Brimming with possibility, youthful growth and pristine delicacy, the early spring garden is a fresh treasure trove of color and texture. The plants featured in this newsletter caught my eye while walking through the nursery and along the surrounding borders. Hopefully, a handful of them will spark your interest as well!
