Lupinus ‘The Pages’

Lupinus

Lupine or Bluebonnet

Laden with tightset pealike blossoms, Lupine’s sweetly scented, 10 to 12 in. spikes tower above good-looking foliage. Radiating out, like the fingers of a hand, rich green leaves collect glistening beads of water with their silky hairs.

Developed by George Russell, an English plantsman, these stately, June blooming hybrids present one of the longest and most spectacular floral parades at that time. A lover of cool weather and moist, well drained soil, Bluebonnets detest hot, humid conditions, and look their best planted in groups. We cultivated the following Russell hybrids from seed.

Lupinus ‘The Pages’ full sun

Handsome, prominently segmented leaves etch a verdant support for the soaring flowery steeples warmed by feisty carmine-red hues.

Blooms May–June.

Size: 3-1/4' high x 18"–2' wide; hardy to zone 4.

Dainty blooms and unfurling leaves forge an early spring treasure trove of color and texture.

In the last ten days, we’ve experienced all kinds of weather at Digging Dog, including frosty mornings, torrential downpours, deafening hail, glorious sunny 70 º afternoons and even sleet! Thankfully spring is almost here and signs of its arrival grow more evident every day. Brimming with possibility, youthful growth and pristine delicacy, the early spring garden is a fresh treasure trove of color and texture. The plants featured in this newsletter caught my eye while walking through the nursery and along the surrounding borders. Hopefully, a handful of them will spark your interest as well! All of us here at the nursery wish you a very happy spring and countless happy afternoons digging in a garden!

Customer Comment:

“I held my breath and opened the box (after a long delay in opening the delivered plants, due to catastrophic flooding), dug down through the damp paper shreds and found all the plants alive!!!! I'm so relieved. I had to write and thank you for the hardiness of the plants, and for packing them so carefully.... Thank you, Digging Dog. I'll be back.”
