at Digging Dog

Crimson Cinquefoil

Potentilla

Cinquefoil

Said to be useful in medicine and magic at least since the time of Hippocrates, the sun-loving Cinquefoil likes well drained soil and partial shade in hotter climates, obliges both cold and drought, and can be nestled into the rockery or atop a garden wall alongside Campanulas or Stachys.

Don’t be surprised if you too fall under the spell of this undemanding, hearty perennial named for its sumptuously colored flowers and powerful presence. Lobed, strawberry-like, dark green foliage shapes a tidy clump beneath deep raspberry-red blooms with rich-as-velvet, ruby-black centers and bright white stamens.

Said to be useful in medicine and magic, the sun-loving Cinquefoil likes well drained soil and partial shade in hotter climates, obliges both cold and drought, and can be nestled into the rockery or atop a garden wall alongside Erysimum ‘Wenlock Beauty’.

Dainty blooms and unfurling leaves forge an early spring treasure trove of color and texture.

In the last ten days, we’ve experienced all kinds of weather at Digging Dog, including frosty mornings, torrential downpours, deafening hail, glorious sunny 70 º afternoons and even sleet! Thankfully spring is almost here and signs of its arrival grow more evident every day. Brimming with possibility, youthful growth and pristine delicacy, the early spring garden is a fresh treasure trove of color and texture. The plants featured in this newsletter caught my eye while walking through the nursery and along the surrounding borders. Hopefully, a handful of them will spark your interest as well! All of us here at the nursery wish you a very happy spring and countless happy afternoons digging in a garden!

Customer Comment:

“I ordered three Kniphofias and a Salvia a little over a week ago, and received them today. E-mail response to my web order was prompt and provided all the information I needed. The Kniphofias are nice, healthy, generous divisions. The Salvia is…good value for the price and very healthy.”
