Veronica spicata ‘Royal Candles’
at Digging Dog

Spiked Speedwell

Veronica

Speedwell

According to legend, Saint Veronica used her handkerchief to soothe Christ’s brow, and forever after, it bore markings that are supposedly replicated in these long blooming Speedwell flowers. Flourishing in sunny, well drained sites, our Veronica selections are undemanding, and deliver dazzling color to the summer border.

Veronica spicata ‘Royal Candles’ full sun

Plentiful and sumptuously colored, the dense, dark violet-blue tapers crown a compact, noninvasive base of glossy deep green foliage that stays fresh well into fall. Show off this perky new British cultivar right up front with Achillea ‘Marmalade’s cheerful yellow flowers.

Blooms June–July.

Size: 15"–18" high x 18" wide; hardy to zone 4.

Dainty blooms and unfurling leaves forge an early spring treasure trove of color and texture.

In the last ten days, we’ve experienced all kinds of weather at Digging Dog, including frosty mornings, torrential downpours, deafening hail, glorious sunny 70 º afternoons and even sleet! Thankfully spring is almost here and signs of its arrival grow more evident every day. Brimming with possibility, youthful growth and pristine delicacy, the early spring garden is a fresh treasure trove of color and texture. The plants featured in this newsletter caught my eye while walking through the nursery and along the surrounding borders. Hopefully, a handful of them will spark your interest as well! All of us here at the nursery wish you a very happy spring and countless happy afternoons digging in a garden!

Customer Comment:

“Very nice web site.  I am especially pleased to see your large selection of perennial herbs with the extensive narratives.  We are building up a garden...after Katrina destroyed our old home.”
