Euphorbia

Milkwort

Named after Euphorbus, physician to the king of Mauritania, this robust, sun-loving genus includes the familiar Poinsettia and is over 1600 species strong. Most species have a poisonous milky sap and softly colored bracts that surround subtly defined flowers. Autumn watches their narrow green leaves turn shades of red, orange and yellow.

Perhaps more muted in color than a cardinal’s wing but still as captivating, this new cultivar is enlivened with red-tinged young growth and red floral buds held by reddish stems. All this rubescent coloring richly complements the handsome dark green foliage, and in late winter the profusion of radiant yellow-green bracts set its compact form aglow. Appealing year-round, ‘Red Wing’ can be paired with Omphalodes.

Blooms late March–May.

Size: 20"–2' 0" high x 2' 0" wide; hardy to zone 5.

This time of year may find some landscapes a tad lackluster. When designing your garden, you may wish to include plants that remain perky thoughout the season or experience their heyday now. The plants featured in this newsletter provide a lot of late season oomph and promise to beckon you down the pathways of your garden.

Our next guided Saturday Stroll is September 16th., followed by October 7th. We hope you’ll come visit us this summer.

Customer Comment:

“Surfing the web for a special plant, I chanced on Digging Dog Nursery. I thought that any nursery that could create an Egyptian Gothic out of Anubis must have some pretty cool things going for it. I was right, and my first order was a pleasure. Well packed, healthy plants and extremely appealing people on the other side of the screen.”
