Campanula punctata ‘Cherry Bells’
at Digging Dog

Campanula

Bellflower

The definitive bellflower, Campanulas melt your heart as they ring in the summer. The genus includes nearly 300 species, from dainty miniatures to stalwart uprights; we can’t resist using them in almost every garden design. Campanulas prefer filtered sun inland, full sun on the coast.

Not one person has passed by this plant in our garden without stopping to admire its extraordinary bell-shaped cherry-red flowers, which are neatly edged in white. Brightened by pale, purple-spotted throats, they can extend over 3 in. If the timing is right, onlookers will also notice the unusual ridged buds, fastened by long, narrow green calyxes. The ample-sized, pendulous blooms and buds are especially striking against the backdrop of somewhat triangular, serrated green leaves.

Blooms July–mid-October.

Size: 20"–2' 0" high x 2' 0" wide; hardy to zone 5.

Perennials that cool down a hot summer day, refreshing foliage, soothing blooms, last chance to take advantage of our summer sale!

Bring sparkling beauty to your August plantings

Perhaps you’re looking for some soothing floral or foliar accents on a hot summer day! We’ve found that snowy white, clear pink, pale yellow and deep blue blooms coupled with silver, bluish green or emerald-toned leaves become refreshing counterpoints to warmer-hued flowers. They offer a place where your eye can rest, much like cleansing your palette when tasting wine. These shades meld the spicy-colored flowers of many Achillea, Crocosmia, Dahlia, Geum, Helenium, Kniphofia, Rudbeckia and Salvia.

Our next guided Saturday Strolls is August 19th., followed by September 16th & October 7th. We hope you’ll come visit us this summer.

Customer Comment:

“Very nice web site.  I am especially pleased to see your large selection of perennial herbs with the extensive narratives.  We are building up a garden...after Katrina destroyed our old home.”
